Everyone Else Isn’t Actually Ahead

This article was written by Chad Schoonmaker and published by Crossroads Professional Coaching.

It usually doesn’t start with a full-blown crisis.
It starts quietly.

A quick scroll.
Someone else’s post.
A win that isn’t yours.

“Oh… they went there on vacation.”
“He got that promotion?”
“They landed that client?”
“He can deadlift how much?”

And just like that, before you even know what hit you, the questions sneak in.
Am I behind? Am I doing enough? Did I miss the memo where everyone else figured life out?

That small thought plants a seed. And if we’re not careful, that seed grows into a full-blown epic novel.

This story says you’re late.
Everyone else is ahead.
You’re not enough.

A story that convinces you God is blessing everyone else more clearly, more abundantly, more quickly, and definitely more publicly.

Comparison culture isn’t new. But let’s be honest, it’s never been this constant, this daily, this in your face.

We carry highlight reels in our pockets of people’s lives that are not our own. Curated success stories. Filtered faith journeys. Perfect families, bodies, business ventures, quiet times (apparently). And over time, it messes with your sense of identity if you let it.

If we’re not careful, we start believing their pace should be our pace. Their calling should be our calling. Or worse, we quietly start wondering: Is God holding out on me?

Comparison isn’t just emotional.
It’s spiritual.

Because comparison doesn’t simply make us feel insecure. It makes us forget who we are.

So how do we stop comparing ourselves?
Delete social media forever? Move to the woods? Become a monk?

That sounds peaceful… but also unrealistic.

Healing from comparison doesn’t start with trying harder. It starts with remembering more deeply.

When comparison takes over, communion fades. And somewhere along the way, we forget a simple truth: we’re all sheep. Not influencers. Not brands. Sheep.

We lose touch with the voice of the Shepherd, the One who says, You are mine. And instead of listening to Him, we start listening to noise.

So let’s anchor ourselves in truth again and again:

  • Your value is not measured by visibility.
  • Your worth is not tied to productivity.
  • Your timeline is not behind.

God is not late. And He is not confused about where you are.

Check out Psalm 139… We are fearfully and wonderfully made, knit together on purpose, with intention. God doesn’t mass-produce callings. He doesn’t “copy and paste” purpose. The world seems to celebrate sameness, but God celebrates uniqueness.

He gives different gifts to build the Kingdom.
So reminder, we actually need your gifts.

Which means your path will look different than anyone else’s. And it always was supposed to.

Comparison feeds on discontent. Contentment, on the other hand, begins with trust. Trusting that God is working in places you can’t see yet. Trusting that obedience matters more than what gets posted. Trusting that faithfulness in hidden seasons still carries eternal weight, even if it never goes viral.

If you find yourself stuck in comparison, step away from the noise long enough to hear God’s voice again. Ask Him to remind you of what He’s already given you. Not just resources, but identity. Speak gratitude out loud. Practice celebrating others without shrinking yourself.

And don’t do this alone.

Stay rooted in community with people who know you, see you, and remind you who you are when you forget. The body of Christ isn’t a competition; it’s a dinner table. It’s communion. One family. We weren’t created to rank each other. We were created to run, build, work, and celebrate together.

As a reminder…

Your life is not less valuable because someone else crossed the finish line first.
Your voice is not weaker because someone else is louder.
You don’t need to prove your worth.

Just abide.

We’re called to bear fruit. And fruit grows slowly, roots first, under the surface through seasons we don’t always recognize.

It’s Ok if your fruit is taking longer to harvest. It’s still fruit.

The world is measuring, judging, scrolling, and counting.
But the Kingdom moves to a different rhythm.

So take a breath. Exhale.
Unclench your fists.

God isn’t rushing you.
He isn’t comparing you.

He’s forming you.

And that is enough.
