Instagram in 2026: What’s Actually Working Right Now?

This post was written by Chad Schoonmaker and published by Crossroads Professional Coaching.
A lot of business owners, and honestly plenty of everyday users, are frustrated with Instagram right now. Me included.
You post consistently.
Tried daily Reels.
Added all the hashtags.
Stories? More posts? Now Instants?
Maybe you’ve even found yourself posting in the dark while trending audio plays in the background like some kind of digital purgatory.
And yet… your reach is flat.
The truth is, Instagram has changed. Again.
The platform isn’t rewarding random posting or generic motivational content anymore. It’s rewarding connection, originality, and content people actually care enough about to share with someone else.
In other words, Instagram wants humans acting like humans again.
Here’s what I’m seeing might work for business owners trying to grow their audience without turning into full-time influencers.
Stop Treating DMs Like Customer Service
Instagram has quietly shifted from being a broadcast platform to more of a sharing platform.
One of the strongest signals your content can send is whether someone shares it in a direct message, or shared your post to their stories.
Think about the last few posts you’ve sent to a friend.
“This reminded me of you.”
“We were just talking about this.”
“You need to watch this.”
Business accounts need to stop posting like billboards and start posting like they’re trying to start conversations.
Create content that’s relatable.
- Useful.
- Funny.
- Insightful.
- Or painfully accurate.
Clarity Beats Creativity
A lot of people are trying to be clever online when they really need to be clear.
Instagram’s search functions work much more like Google than they used to. The algorithm needs obvious signals about who you are, what you do, and who you help.
If your page talks about…
Business
Faith
Leadership
Fishing
Coffee
Fitness
Real estate
Funny videos
…Instagram doesn’t know who to show your content to.
Honestly, neither do people.
The businesses growing right now are incredibly clear. And most of the time repetitive.
Someone should land on your profile and immediately know:
Who you help.
What you talk about.
Why they should follow you.
Simple scales. Find your lane and stay in it.
Original Content Is Winning Again
Here’s the good news.
You don’t have to dance.
No need viral hacks.
You don’t need to copy some 22-year-old “growth guru” yelling business advice from a rented Lamborghini.
What you do need is…
Your perspective.
Your stories.
Life lessons.
Your personality.
A true story.
The internet is flooded with reposted content and AI-generated fluff.
People are craving real humans again. I think this has a lot to do with the Covid pandemic.
The mistakes you’ve made in business?
Content.
The lessons from a terrible hire?
Content.
The behind-the-scenes mistakes nobody wants to talk about?
Definitely content.
Saves and Shares Matter More Than Likes
Likes feel good. We call these vanity numbers.
Saves and shares build reach.
Why?
Because they signal value.
A save says…
“I need this later.”
A share says…
“Someone else needs to see this.”
That’s why practical content performs so well.
- Checklists.
- Mistakes to avoid.
- Lessons learned.
- Frameworks.
- Processes.
- Step-by-step advice.
The goal isn’t just attention anymore. The goal is usefulness.
Stop Posting and Start Storytelling
This is probably the biggest shift I’m seeing.
The trend-chasing, dopamine-hit content doesn’t seem to have the shelf life it once did.
People want stories again.
They want personality.
Consistency.
Authentic behind-the-scenes moments.
The accounts growing the fastest feel less like random content machines and more like episodic shows people actually want to keep following.
Business owners should pay attention.
Who cares about going viral? You need people to care enough about your story that they want to come back.
The Biggest Mistake Business Owners Make on the Gram
Here’s where I think a lot of business owners get stuck.
They think Instagram is the marketing.
It isn’t.
Instagram is simply one place your marketing shows up.
The real work happens before you ever hit “Post.”
- Who are you trying to reach?
- What problems are they trying to solve?
- What stories build trust?
- What questions are your customers asking?
- How does every post move someone one step closer to doing business with you?
When businesses struggle on social media, it’s usually not because the algorithm hates them.
It’s because they’re creating content without a strategy.
Don’t Have Time? You’re Not Alone.
Let’s be honest.
Most business owners didn’t start their company because they dreamed of creating Instagram Reels.
You have customers to serve. Employees to lead. Bigger problems to solve.
Trying to become a full-time content creator on top of all that can feel exhausting.
That’s exactly why we do what we do at Crossroads.
We help businesses build a marketing strategy that reflects who they are, tells their story, and creates content people actually want to engage with.
Without spending every evening wondering what to post next.
Could you do it yourself?
Sure.
Just like you could cut your own hair.
Sometimes it’s worth calling a professional.
Final Thought
Here’s what’s funny.
Instagram is basically rewarding the same things that have always grown businesses in the real world.
- Trust.
- Clarity.
- Consistency.
- Relationships.
- Authenticity.
- Usefulness.
The algorithm changes every year.
Human connection doesn’t.
Create content people want to send to a friend.
Talk about what you actually know about.
Show the human side of your business.
Be clear about who you help.
And, for the love, stop using Facetune on your selfies.
