Perseverance: Staying the Course in Faith and Business

This article was written by Sue Wiley and published by Crossroads Professional Coaching.

As we step into a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the successes and challenges of the year past. For many small business owners, the question is: How do we move forward with purpose and perseverance? With so many uncertainties in the economy and the world around us, the new year brings both opportunities and obstacles.

This post isn’t about starting fresh or making resolutions that fizzle out by February. Instead, it’s about embracing the mindset of perseverance—staying on course, leaning on faith, and pressing forward, no matter the circumstances.

The Theme of Perseverance

Perseverance is a recurring theme—both in business and faith. As I searched through our blog archives, I realized how often I’ve written about this topic. And as I re-read those posts, I found solace.

As the new year brings employee turnover, customers coming and going, and an ambiguous economy, we are faced with a choice. Will we stick our heads in the sand, hoping the stars align in our favor? Or will we dig in, focus on what we can control, and persevere in our efforts to stay on vision?

If you’ve read my blogs or know me, you know I choose the latter every time.

It is a fundamental process for a Christian in business to:

  • Look to God for their purpose and passion.
  • When led, start a business to achieve that God vision.
  • Work really hard to make the business work.
  • And when setbacks come—yes, we persevere.

A Collection of Encouragement and Wisdom

Instead of creating a brand-new blog on this topic, I’ve gathered some of my favorite past posts on perseverance. Together, they offer practical wisdom and faith-filled encouragement for navigating setbacks, remaining steadfast, and glorifying God in your business.

Success Requires Perseverance

I feel like the bumper lanes at a kid’s bowling alley.  I am trying to keep clients from pivoting, quitting, or waiting on their business plans for the new year.  This blog offers a clear process for evaluating strategies, overcoming discouragement, and staying the course, reminding us that consistency and follow-through often matter more than the plan itself

Love, Perseverance, and the True Meaning of Success

This one brings tears to my eyes every time.  Yes, it is about my daughter, so probably adds the emotional ingredient.  However, she is truly the most tenacious person I know.  She will stay on the road to passion and purpose and persevere her way to success.

What To Do When Setbacks Happen

Setbacks are an inevitable part of growth, but how we respond makes all the difference. Whether it’s losing a client, facing failure, or enduring personal challenges, learning to handle obstacles with perspective and faith builds resilience. This blog explores practical steps to process setbacks, lean on God, seek wise counsel, and keep moving forward with strength and purpose.

Christian Business Owners: Three Reasons Character Matters

Running a business requires many skills, but there’s one essential trait that no business can thrive without: character. Character shapes your company’s culture, impacts your reputation with customers and vendors, and reflects your values as a leader. This blog explores why moral excellence and integrity are foundational to building a business that lasts—and how striving for strong character not only fosters trust and growth but also glorifies God in the process.

Moving Forward with Perseverance

Last year was a challenge for many. We waited for inflation to slow down and interest rates to drop. As business owners, we don’t want to blame the economy, we hate setbacks, and we want a clear path forward.

It’s a new year, but the road ahead is anything but certain. The inauguration yesterday brought the promise of change—but how will it impact the economy? How will it impact your business? How will it impact you personally?

I believe our only path forward is to persevere on God’s plan for our lives. It’s not a time to wait and see—it’s a time to act with faith, focus, and purpose, trusting in His plan.
